YouTube expands into free ad-supported shows in the US

In the US, YouTube has moved into the domain of ad-supported TV for the first time with confirmation that it will add thousands of TV shows to an ad-supported streaming service. This will initially launch in the US however if it is a success it could launch to a wider audience in the future. It also follows on from the launch of a range of other AVOD services announced from other streaming services.


Zalando Implications


There is a growing trend worldwide of more subscription services offering an AVOD alternative in an attempt to gain viewers. This is evident with Disney+, NBC Peacock and ITV having all recently either launched or announced AVOD services. YouTube doing the same adds to this trend that will seemingly provide further advertising opportunities.
